Currently all mobile devices can be used to project the content that we are enjoying on these terminals to the television. In addition, there are different technologies that facilitate this action. However, today we come to explain one of them, called Miracast.
And not only that, but we will also tell you how this protocol works for the projection of content from our mobile to another device. We are facing a technology that emerged several years ago with the aim that we could say goodbye forever to HDMI cables. Despite this, many users today are still unaware of its existence.
Miracast, the great unknown
Several years have passed since this technology appeared, but as we mentioned, not everyone knows about it. Therefore, it is important to know that it is a protocol that offers us the possibility that two positives can connect and reflect the screen of one of them on the other. For example, with this we can enjoy the content of our mobile device on any television, which is compatible with said protocol.
One of the most important aspects when wanting to use this technology is that it is made solely to mirror the screen from one device to another. What does this mean? Well, for example, when projecting the panel of our terminal, on which we have YouTube, to the television, the mobile screen will remain on at all times. Therefore, by locking the smartphone, the content will stop being broadcast on the TV.
And although we are facing a protocol that has become a good wireless alternative to connecting devices by cable, there are still certain limitations and problems that do not benefit the use of Miracast at all. The positive side is that it has been designed, unlike other protocols such as Apple AirPlay or the Google Chromecast, to be a cross-platform standard. However, although the theory is really good, the problems that we will show you later have caused it to stop being used and it is still largely unknown by users.
This protocol basically works by send content via WiFi Direct, a technology that was developed so that direct communication could be made between different devices. In addition, it performs the exchange of this data at a higher speed than Bluetooth, it is even estimated that it is up to 10 times faster.
And although this technology leads us to think that it is necessary for all devices to use WiFi, it will not be necessary for them to be on the same network. So when sending content to a compatible TV, a WiFi network will be automatically created between our mobile and the TV, sending the data from one to another directly and without cables.
In addition, by establishing said connection between the two there will be no type of lag or pull, so we will see perfectly the content we want. And it will allow us to send videos with a FULL HD video resolution or lower. When the connection between both devices is successful, there is practically no lag and everything that is seen on the screen of one can be seen on the other. We can even send content that is protected by Copyright, thanks to its DRM layer.
How to activate and disconnect it on an Android mobile
Most of the Smart TVs that have been presented in the last five years have WiFi and other functionalities, such as Miracast. The process to connect and disconnect it is really easy, so you can test with your terminal and television, as long as they are compatible with this functionality.
The first step we must do is go to the Settings of our terminal. Its location will change depending on the mobile we have, since each manufacturer has placed it where it believes it is most appropriate, and the same happens with its name. Although it is normal to find it by the following names: Wireless Screen, Mirroring, Miracast or Screen Sharing. However, we can also find it more easily in the notification settings panel, located under the WiFi icons and others.
Being the first time that we are going to use this function, a menu will appear in which it will appear that a device connected to your WiFi network is being searched. Once our television appears in said menu, we will have to accept and wait for the content of our mobile to be seen on the television panel. To disconnect it, we can do it from the TV itself or from our smartphone.
Miracast vs Chromecast
Despite the great utility of the protocol that we have presented today, there is an alternative that in recent times has achieved a good reputation, the chromecast. And it is that, one of the main differences that we find, if our TV does not have compatibility with the first protocol, if there is the possibility of using the latter, because in the case of Chromecast, the connection is made through the Google Home app .
The most negative part of the latter is that it will not work if we do not have an Internet connection. Whereas, Miracast, when creating a closed Wi-Fi connection between the devices, it will not require an active Internet connection. So there is a big difference between the two, and the latter benefits the first protocol. On the other hand, with Chromecast you will not need any type of compatibility by parts of the devices, we only need them to be connected to the network.
Miracast connection problems
This protocol is not perfect, which is why many manufacturers are deciding to turn their back on it. In addition, if we want to use it daily to enjoy watching movies or videos, it will be necessary for our device to always keep the screen active. And it is not the only failure, since we can also find the following.
The first of them when using this screen mirroring technology will be that our terminals will not be able to be used while watching videos, images or other content. And that’s not all, because we will always have to keep the screen active, which causes a higher consumption of the mobile battery. Something that, in the long run, could greatly affect its useful life.
In addition, it is possible that a connection between the two devices may not be achieved since some mobile phone manufacturers have dropped support for this protocol. This is why there will be no way to project the panel of our terminal on television, and we will have to opt for other alternatives such as Google Chromecast.
Another of the big problems that Miracast presents is that it has definitely not managed to have a reliable protocol, since it gives too many failures in the link. Something that can be so much because of the TV how the mobile, although they have the necessary certificates for use. A fact that has caused what we have been commenting on, a disuse of this technology to share the screen.
